Bedtime stories about going to sleep
Calm picture-book stories about goodnights, sleepovers, missing a parent and counting sheep. For toddlers to age 8, with short and long versions.
Why read stories about sleep & bedtime?
Some children fall asleep the moment the light goes off. Many need help winding down, and some carry a worry into bed: a sitter tonight, a first sleepover, a tag that scratches. These stories put those moments into a gentle plot so your child can see a character feel the same thing and find a way through it.
They are slow on purpose. Short sentences, quiet scenes and a clear ending make them a good last story of the night, after the more exciting one.
Questions to ask after the story
A minute of talk after the last page is where a story turns into a conversation. Try one of these:
- What helped the hero feel calm enough to sleep?
- What is one thing that helps you feel cosy at bedtime?
- If you woke up in the night, who could you ask for help?
Tips on asking questions without turning bedtime into a quiz are in our guide to reading aloud.
