Bedtime stories for anxious kids and big feelings

Gentle stories about first days at school, dentist visits, homesickness, separation and disappointment, written to help young children name a feeling.

Why read stories about big feelings?

Bedtime is when the day’s worries come out. A story is a safe way to talk about them: the feeling belongs to a koala or a panda first, and your child can decide how close it is to their own.

Each story here follows a small, real worry through to a calm, believable ending, usually with a trusted adult or friend helping. None of them pretend the feeling vanishes; they show what to do with it.

Questions to ask after the story

A minute of talk after the last page is where a story turns into a conversation. Try one of these:

  1. How did the hero feel at the start? Where in the body do you feel that?
  2. Who helped, and what did they say or do?
  3. Have you ever felt like that? What helped you?

Tips on asking questions without turning bedtime into a quiz are in our guide to reading aloud.
